The Church of Santa Maria is located in the village of Piasca in the municipality of Cabezon de Liebana , in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria ( Spain ). Temple was the missing Monastery of Santa Maria la Real, it is one of the most remarkable testimonies of Romanesque art Spaniard. It was declared a National Monument on 4 July as as 1930
................................
Initially there was a monastery of uncertain origin that could date back to the eighth century or IX , whose existence in 930 have been documented references. It is also known that the aylo abbess was 941 in front of a mixed monastic community or dplice that was governed by the rule of San Fructuoso, and that century and the next were a time of splendor and aggrandizement. It is not surprising that in the XII century is decided to replace the old temple monk by a sumptuous church Romanesque that is what has survived to this day. This church was dedicated to Santa Maria , as stated in an existing lapidary inscription next to the main entrance, the 21 as February as 1172 .
.........................................
In 1439 , as stated in its registration, restoration and reform affecting ships and their were performed apses , so that the primitive Romanesque structure only the bottom of the apses persists, abundant sculptural ornamentation and covers. Also at that time the monastic buildings located in the west wing of the cloister were rebuilt, these being the only partially remain.
The headstone which has been mentioned further reports that the dedication was celebrated by Bishop Juan de Leon , with assistance from the abbot of Sahagn , Don Gutierre, and the prior of Piasca, Pedro, and was the master of the work one such Covaterio.
The church
Western Front.
...............................................
It consists of three ships of which, as usual, the center is the widest. The nave and the right finish off their heads by two separate circular apses polygonal outside and inside. The left ship also had in his day an apse in symmetry with the opposite side, but has disappeared and now occupies its place a sacristy. The ships are developed in four sections of the former is the same width as the central nave, leading to a transept no ostensible abroad.
.....................................................
Both the vaults of the apses as ships and cruises are distinctly veined and look Gothic , as befits the time were made ( XV century ), back to the primitive Romanesque factory.
................................................................
It has a double access: the front door opens at the foot of the central nave, in imafronte; another door of smaller dimensions allows the entrance on the south side, this being that once communicated with the cloister.
.............................................
It is precisely covers the most valuable and unique of the whole by its rich iconography elements.
................................................
The main cover, western, consists of five archivolts slightly pointed, of which the fourth (counting from the inside) is moldings aboceladas, the first, third and fifth present their dovelaje carved with plant motifs, and, finally, the second archivolt goes carved with a varied selection of sculptures, such as lions, human and animal heads, two pairs of musicians, figures etc. The five archivolts not rely on identical supports: two of them do on columns of a circular shaft, while the other three angles discharged onto the wall whose edges form a quarter round to columnilla delivery mode. In any case, one side of the cover there are five capitals and impost run over them or impost , highly decorated, you go through the jamb of the door. The capitals show splendid relief carvings of great variety and magnificent iconography: dragons winged, centaurs , griffins and all sorts of mythological animals and chimeras , as well as a scene that could be " The Annunciation ". As a note of originality, one of the shafts on the right side bears carved an image of San Miguel in fight with the devil .
Southern Home.
..........................................
This cover has been preserved from the original faade a small gallery of three blind arches, the central midpoint and lobed side, which house two representative Romanesque carvings of San Pedro -portando keys that simbolizan- and St. Paul -with a book that reads "PAULUS" - and another the sixteenth century depicting the Virgin and Child in her arms.
policromado capital.
....................................................
Smaller and merit, though not uninteresting, it is the southern front, also called "gate of horn" which connected the temple with cloister . Two archivolts rest on a single column on each side, with interposition of a capital and a large cornice . All it adorned with scrolls, floral motifs and, each voussoir of the inner archivolt, with diverse representations of human figures.
