The Cybele Palace (Palacio de Cibeles), formerly the Palace of Communication (Spanish: Palacio de Comunicaciones) until 2011, is a palace located on the Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain. Currently the seat of the City Council, it opened in 1919 as the headquarters of Correos, the Spanish postal and telecommunications service. It was designed by Antonio Palacios and Joaquin Otamendi.

History
Like the eighteenth century fountain in front of it, the palace has become an emblematic monument of the city. However, since 2007 it no longer serves its original function. There is a post office in part of the building, but Correos headquarters has moved to Campo de las Naciones and the Postal and Telegraphic Museum to Aravaca. Now it is the seat of the Madrid City Council. The mail sorting office has been converted to serve as the council chamber.

Conservation status and access
.......................................
Palacios is seen as a modernist architect, but his work is also of interest for its historical references, for example to the work of Rodrigo Gil de Hontan. As the Palacio de Comunicaciones, the building was given a heritage listing (Bien de Inters Cultural) in 1993.
...................
The former communications palace is a colossal building and one of the city's landmarks. Designed and built by Antonio Palacios and Joaqun Otamendi as the headquarters of the Spanish Post Office and Telegraph Company, it was inaugurated in 1909 and since 2007 it has housed the offices of the Madrid City Council.
..............................................................
The building combines features drawn from a variety of sources, including: Gothic Revival architecture, especially the work of Viollet-le-Duc; the original approach to structure and materials of architects and engineers like Gustave Eiffel and Otto Wagner, and Antonio Palacios' passion for Spanish regional styles, in particular Late Gothic architecture and the work of Rodrigo Gil de Hontan.
.........................................................
The design for the Post Office building was based on rational and functional criteria. A large courtyard led to the general postal, telegraph and telephone services on the ground floor, which needed to be accessible to the public. These could also be reached via the many additional entrances around the exterior of the building. The upper floors were reserved for administrative staff, management, the sorting room and a telegraph office with direct access to the aerial on the roof of the building, which was 70 metres high, including the central tower. The building was designed as a "total work of art" in which the smallest details, from the lights and the ventilation system to the desks in the operations room, formed a unified artistic whole serving the building's primary function as the central post office
