Ermita de San Juan de Ciliergo, Panes, Peamellera Baja, Asturias, Espana, Northern Spain.
...............................................
The thirteenth century Romanesque church of San Juan de Ciliergo, is located about 500 meters off the roadside heading south through the Picos of Europa towards the village of Potes in Panes. This Romanesque Church was burned during the Civil War.
...............................................
It is rectangular with a single nave and square apse covered with barrel vault and angular offset to the outside by buttresses and a loophole in the southern side. It has slender belfry with two arches and semicircular covers south and west, without decoration. Interesting are the Arc de Triomphe and their hooks inside (decorated with large veined leaves and palmettos), like the sculptural remains of the west facade.
...............................................
It is medium in size, oriented east-west, with a single rectangular nave and slightly lower. The church has a door at the foot, slightly pointed and is off-key. The steeple columns are very solid and large holding two arches and gable top shaped with stone cross terminal. On the southern side of the church there is a second door, which is narrow with a pointed arch.
...............................................
To the right there is a narrow window, missing a top as well as several holes or weep holes in the wall that probably served to support the beams of an old porch. Today although there are still remains of of the porch, it is no longer existant. A low protective wall or railing of masonry remains along the edge of the structures roof or balcony around the south and west sides.
...............................................
The head is reinforced by two angled reinforcements made with large stone. The cornice is stone, molded, and covers two views. On the north side attached is a small unit with a window to the east, which would be used as a sacristy. It is different from the stone church.
...............................................
Inside, the triumphal arch can just be seen through the vegetation that invades the church. It is on two turns, the smooth inner and outer decorated by leaves arranged in a radial form along the dustcover; the same theme adorns the fascia, except the first northern doorpost adorned with a monstrous head of an Engola. On this side there are missing column shafts. The interior of the head has a barrel vault, which starts in a simple run fascia. The vault retains traces of plaster, paint strokes with little reddish color, imitating ashlar. On the north wall a little credence topped triangular digs. The front wall is flat and smooth.
...............................................
The Hermitage of San Juan de Ciliergo was opened for worship until 1936, year in which a fire destroyed the temple during the Civil War, leaving the temple dilapidated and in a perennial state of neglect that now Peamellera Baja City Council wants to curb. The last renovations on the ruins of the church, including the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Asturias, dates back to 1989, when the cover of the apse was repaired.

Thank you to the person whom recently purchased this image. The history of this church and its surrounding area is absolutely incredible. I LOVE that my family roots are tied to the Cantabrian region of Spain.
