Piasca History:
The village of Piasca is located in the depths of the Liebana in a totally rural environment fields and cattle, but the people have an unexpected surprise, a jewel: The Romanesque church of Santa Maria la Real de Piasca located in the lower part of town.

In the ninth century there was already a settlement, but the first document on the church is from or about the year 930. In the year 941 a group of 36 nuns and an undetermined number of monastic monks sign a pact under the abbess according Aylo Rule of San Fructuoso.

In 1078 the monastery was abandoned by the nuns who move to San Pedro de Due�as as (Leon).

In 1122 the incorporation of the monastery of Santa Maria de Piasca to San Facundo and Primitivo of Sahag�n occurs.

The twelfth century is the time to rise more Piasca Monastery. In 1172, still Prior D.Pedro, this monumental church was built, as recorded in the epigraphic inscription next to the main entrance.

In the late thirteenth century the heritage of the Monastery reached its greatest expansion covering the entire valley Pesaguero and some possessions in the valley of Cereceda and Cillorigo.

In the fourteenth century began a slow decline.

Historia:
El pueblo de Piasca esta situado en lo mas profundo de La Liebana en un ambiente totalmente rural de campos de cultivo y ganado, sin embargo el pueblo tiene una sorpresa inesperada, una autentica joya: La Iglesia romanica de Santa Maria la Real de Piasca situada en la parte baja del pueblo.

En el siglo IX ya existia un poblado, pero el primer documento sobre la iglesia es del a�o 930. En el �ao 941 un grupo de 36 monjas y un numero indeterminado de monjes firman un pacto monastico bajo la abadesa Aylo y segun la regla de San Fructuoso.

El siglo XII es el momento de mas auge del Monasterio de Piasca. En 1172, siendo Prior D.Pedro, se construye esta iglesia monumental, segun consta en la inscripcion epigrafica junto a la portada principal.

A finales del siglo XIII el patrimonio del Monasterio llego a su mayor expansion abarcando todo el valle de Pesaguero y alguna posesiones en los valles de Cereceda y Cillorigo.

En el siglo XIV comienza un lento declinar.

La primitiva construccion del complejo monastico de Piasca seria muy sencilla, un peque�o templo que ocuparia el abside mayor y tramo central del crucero de la iglesia actual y diversas dependencias junto al claustro totalmente derruido en la actualidad.

Los problemas deestabilidad del monasterio debido al rio son conocidos ya en documentos del siglo XI.

En 1172, dependiendo de la regla benedictina se amplio en estilo romanico y se hicieron las actuales portadas, con impresionante decoracion escultorica del maestro Covaterio.
