San Vicente de la Barquera - Cantabria Region of Northern Spain. YES, one of my all time favorite places in the world where tranquility meets history, the mountains meet the sea and the Royal called home.
................
An old fishermen's refuge, San Vicente de la Barquera offers one of the most picturesque sights on the Cantabrian coast, with its beaches, the old village and the exceptional backdrop of the snow-capped mountains of the Picos de Europa.
.......................
San Vicente's old town was declared to be of Cultural Interest in 1987 because of its interesting collection of monuments, forming part of which are the church of
Santa Mara de los ngeles, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the castle and the remains of a wall.
.....................................
The bridges are another sign of the town's identity, such as the Maza bridge, with its 28 arches, which was built on the orders of the Catholic Monarchs in the 16th century, or Parral, which dates from the 18th century.
.................................
It also has some magnificent beaches, such as Fuentes, Primera de San Vicente, El Rosal, El Tostadero, Mern and Gerra, and a beautiful estuary full of brightly-coloured boats. San Vicente de la Barquera's maritime vocation can be appreciated in its gastronomy, which includes excellent fish and seafood and which has its greatest expression in sorropotn or Barquera hotpot, a stew prepared with tuna and potatoes.
..................
The approach to SAN VICENTE DE LA BARQUERA, 12km west of Comillas, is dramatic: marooned on both sides by the sea, the town is entered via a long causeway across the Ro Escudo, the Puente de la Maza. Local lore maintains that if you manage to hold your breath all the way across the bridge, your wish will come true. Inland, dark green, forested hills rise towards the Picos de Europa, strikingly silhouetted as the sun goes down.
...........................
The town itself, a thriving fishing port with a string of locally famed seafood restaurants, is functional rather than pretty, with not all that much left of its historic core. If youre looking for a beach, theres a good sweep of sand fifteen minutes walk away, across the causeway on the east side of the river and flanked by a small forest.
...........................
A hot climb up from the modern town soon brings you to the remnants of the hilltop medieval town, which despite its intriguing setting and spectacular views turns out to be somewhat humdrum. At either end of the ridge, youll find an impressive Renaissance ducal palace (TuesSun 11am2pm & 58pm; 1.40) and a sturdy Romanesque-Gothic church, Santa Mara de los ngeles. The latter, at the highest point, holds a famous reclining statue of the Inquisitor Corro, born here in 1472.
