Description
National Theatre (Teatro Nacional)
..........................
This brilliant, grandiose, exquisite and majestic National Theater was built between 1905 and 1907 (opened in 1908) and its interior has been completely restored and is built on the site of an 18th century monastery and still retains its delightful and elegant charm.
........................
When it was first opened, it enjoyed fame as a glamorous destination for the city's elite but it gradually fell into disrepair and at one point was rented as a movie house. After two separate restorations in the 1970s and early 2000s to repair damage, it was reopened in 2004 and visitors can now enjoy a visit or a performance in its neobaroque Old World style.
..........................
Be sure to take a look at the ceiling frecos by Robert Lewis, a well-known Panamanian artist.Mostly red and golden decorations, an impressive ceiling - mural showing muses and people who are important for the country - painted by Roberto Lewis (one of Panama's finest painters) and an enormous crystal chandelier can be found inside.

This performance center has an outstanding natural acoustics and provides an intimate performance environment and seating for about 800 guests. It presents a comprehensive program of music, dance and theater. Today, its stage hosts classical music, theater and dance performances and they’re incredibly affordable. If you can’t make one of the performances, at least make time to check out the beautifully restored and preserved space.

............................
Casco Viejo is the historic district and cultural gem of Panama City. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, Casco Viejo was established around 1673 by the Spanish colonialists, the Catholic Church, and other settlers. Historically one of the richest and most densely populated neighborhoods in the Americas, Casco Viejo went on to experience decades of neglect around the 1950s. The streets are filled with buildings that served as homes, cathedrals and churches and government buildings over centuries and many architectural phases. Some of these structures have been painstakingly restored and now house museums, gourmet restaurants, quaint shops and upscale residences. Other buildings stand in disrepair or complete ruin and the homes of poor families juxtaposed next door with a remodeled, exclusive property offer a an excellent peek into the varied history that the district has experienced.
